St. Lucia nestles in the chain of islands which comprises the Lesser Antilles. For several years the island was ruled by Britain, but its constitutional status changed on February 22, 1979, when the island became an independent nation. In May 1979 St. Lucia joined the Organization of American States -OAS- and in September of that year the island was admitted into the United Nations as the 142nd Member. Although the island's economy is mainly an agricultural one, tourism continues to play a major role and is the fastest growing industry. With beautiful, secluded beaches, the world's only drive-in volcano, the dramatic Caribbean landmarks, the Pitons-twin peaks rushing the sky, and an excellent range of accommodation, friendly people and a unique cultural potpourri, St. Lucia is no doubt - ~the Helen of the West.~

St. Lucia covers an area of approximately 238 square miles, with a population of 148,183.
