St. Eustatius is an extinct volcano rising 2,000 feet
above the sea. St. Eustatius, locally called Statia, has the distinction of
being the first foreign territory to recognize the United States as a sovereign
nation. The island is ideal for scuba diving, and its reefs are not impacted
or overrun by divers. You can snorkel over 17th and 18th century ruins, and
hike the lush tropical extinct volcano.
St. Eustatius, with a population of 2,000, is five miles long and 2 miles wide,
and has an area of 11.8 square miles.
